Volga-Dnepr Delivers Siemens’ Generator Rotor to Kuwait

Volga-Dnepr Airlines have completed the urgent delivery of a 57-tonne generator rotor to Kuwait on behalf of their longstanding customer Siemens.

Faced with a time critical delivery deadline to move the rotor from its manufacturing site in Mulheim, Germany, Siemens asked Volga-Dnepr’s logistics specialists to project manage the shipment for its transportation onboard one of the airline’s An-124-100 freighters to ensure the 11-metre long cargo reached its destination on-time.

As part of Volga-Dnepr’s ‘Cargo Supermarket’ service offering, the airline organized cargo security screening of the shipment at Cologne Airport, hired the crane to load the rotor onto the An-124-100 and took care of export documentation. The airline also arranged for a crane to be waiting in Kuwait to ensure timely unloading of the cargo, organized its transfer to the warehouse holding area at the airport, re-positioned the crane to load the rotor onto a truck for the final leg of its journey.

Steve Downing, Head of Logistics UK, at Volga-Dnepr, said: “We have a well-established framework agreement with Siemens that means we understand their requirements and can react quickly, and provide the most cost efficient solutions when they need our expertise. We have carried shipments for Siemens regularly over many years but there is no doubt that the development of our engineering and logistics services for very heavy, outsize and complex cargoes has reinforced our relationship because it has extended our capability to a total delivery solution when required.”
