Volga-Dnepr Transport Giant Pandas to Finland
Russian Air Freight carrier Volga-Dnepr recently delivered two Giant Pandas Lumi and Pyry to their new home at Ahtari Zoo in Finland. The Pandas were transported from China aboard one of the company’s freighter aircraft.
Volga-Dnepr Airlines General Director, Mikhail Smirnykh said, This flight in support of such an important wildlife preservation program was special for our company so we are delighted to hear that Lumi and Pyry have acclimatized so quickly to their new surroundings.”
The special delivery project was a joint operation between People’s Republic of China and Finland aimed at further studies and preservation of giant pandas.
Throughout the duration of the flight both the Pandas keepers and a vet from the Finnish zoo were in attendance to ensure their safety and well-being throughout the journey. Special measuring equipment was acquired to monitor the conditions onboard the aircraft. The temperature in the cargo hold was lowered to 10°C one hour before the flights arrival to help the pandas acclimatize to their new home.
Manager of StarBroker Asia Pacific, part of DHL Global Forwarding, Daniel Hou said, “We use Volga-Dnepr services for multiple projects worldwide because we know their advantages in air charter and scheduled operations. The delicate transportation of animals on this important flight proves that we made the right choice.”
Volga-Dnepr Airlines has recently carried out other wildlife preservation projects including delivering two Southern White Rhinos from the Zoological Center Ramat Gan in Israel to Rostov-on-Don Zoo in Russia.
