Boeing HorizonX Ventures Invests in Matternet an Aerial Delivery Startup
The Boeing Company recently announced a major investment in an on-demand unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) delivery start-up named Matternet. The California-based company is pioneering safe delivery operations in urban environments.
Boeing’s expertise in complex logistics and manufacturing capabilities combined with the advanced logistics platform Matternet provides a reliable, efficient transportation of air cargo.
In 2017, Matternet became the first company to be authorized to begin UAV flights over densely populated areas in Switzerland. Since 2017 the company has carried out safe flights leveraging their Matternet Station, M2 drone and Cloud platform and working in conjunction with Swiss Post for on-demand deliveries to several Swiss hospitals delivering medical samples.
Boeing HorizonX Ventures Managing Director, Brian Schettler said, “Matternet’s technology and proven track record make the development of a safe, global autonomous air mobility system a near-term reality,”
He further added, “Our investment will allow Matternet to scale its operations while strengthening Boeing’s position as a leader in next-generation transportation solutions.”
The Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration in 2018 invited Matternet to participate in a program aimed at accelerating the integration of unmanned aircraft into the U.S. national airspace.
The program will see Matternet working with transportation agencies, hospitals and universities in California and North Carolina to facilitate on-demand delivery of medical supplies and samples.
Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Matternet, Andreas Raptopoulos said, “We are excited to partner with Boeing, the pioneers of safe commercial aviation, to make this new mode of transport mainstream, as we expand Matternet’s U.S. and global operations, we will work with Boeing to make next-generation aerial logistics networks a reality and transform our everyday lives.”
