The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced that the aviation industry’s efforts to triple Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) production by 2024 to 1.9 billion litres (1.5 million tonnes) are on track. This projection would account for 0.53% of aviation’s fuel needs in 2024. In a statement, Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, emphasized that SAF is expected to provide about 65% of the mitigation needed for airlines to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The increase in SAF production is essential to achieving sustainability goals in the aviation industry. The industry is looking to diversify feedstocks, such as hydrogenated fatty acids (HEFA), used cooking oils, animal fats, agricultural and forestry residues, and municipal waste, to significantly expand SAF production potential. Existing refineries can also be leveraged to co-process approved renewable feedstocks alongside crude oil streams, potentially accelerating SAF production.
To meet the ambitious target set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to achieve a 5% CO2 emissions reduction for international aviation from SAF by 2030, significant policy measures are necessary. Governments worldwide are being urged to implement incentives and policies to boost investments in renewable fuel production and facilitate technical solutions for diverse feedstocks and production methodologies.
The interest in SAF from the public is evident, with a recent IATA survey revealing that 86% of travelers support the idea of governments providing incentives for airlines to use SAF. This widespread public support underscores the importance of sustainable aviation and the urgency for policy initiatives to drive the industry towards a more sustainable future.
The substantial growth in SAF production capacity and the industry’s commitment to sustainability are positive steps towards achieving the long-term goal of net-zero carbon emissions in aviation by 2050.
