Qatar Airways Cargo recently completed a major operation to transport 2,800 tonnes of flowers, equivalent to 42 million fresh-cut red roses, from Kenya and South America in time for Valentine’s Day. This effort supported the floriculture industry in key regions and ensured that these delicate blooms reached customers worldwide.
From Nairobi, the carrier transported nearly 1,600 tonnes of red roses, while from Bogota and Quito, it carried close to 1,200 tonnes. These shipments were destined for key markets, including Amsterdam, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia.
To meet the increased demand for Valentine’s Day, Qatar Airways Cargo operated nine additional Boeing 777 freighter charters from Nairobi and ten from Quito in the weeks leading up to the holiday. These charters supplemented the carrier’s regular scheduled passenger and cargo flights.
“Both Kenya and South America’s floriculture sectors are success stories that must be celebrated and supported,” said Mark Drusch, Chief Officer of Cargo at Qatar Airways Cargo. “As the world’s leading air cargo carrier, we are proud to play our part in sharing this great product with the world and supporting the local economies.”
Supporting the Floriculture Industry
The transportation of flowers is a significant economic driver for the floriculture sector, particularly during peak seasons like Valentine’s Day. Qatar Airways Cargo’s efforts ensured that these perishable goods reached their destinations fresh and on time, thanks to the carrier’s specialized “Fresh” product, which guarantees a seamless cool chain throughout the transportation process.
“As part of our commitment to contribute to socio-economic development, Qatar Airways Cargo increased capacity by adding extra charter freighters to connect Kenya, Bogota, and Quito’s floriculture sector to key markets and customers worldwide through our network,” added Drusch.
By leveraging its extensive network and efficient cargo operations, Qatar Airways Cargo played a crucial role in supporting the global floriculture industry and delivering millions of roses for Valentine’s Day.
