DB Schenker and Mercedes-Benz have entered into a record-breaking agreement to significantly reduce CO2e emissions from air freight. Mercedes-Benz has placed the largest single-volume order of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) by a DB Schenker customer, aiming to reduce its carbon footprint by 40,000 tons.
The agreement involves DB Schenker procuring approximately 13,000 tons of SAF, which will be allocated to cover export air freight shipments from Frankfurt to Beijing and Shanghai. This initiative represents one of the largest SAF deals in the global automotive and logistics industries.
“Achieving carbon neutrality is a long-haul journey. Our new biofuel agreement with our trusted partner Mercedes-Benz sets a new benchmark for sustainability commitments,” stated Thorsten Meincke, Global Board Member for Air & Ocean Freight at DB Schenker. “By working together, we are actively and immediately reducing emissions in intercontinental supply chains.”
Mercedes-Benz’s Head of Supply Chain Management, Elke Pusskeiler, emphasized the company’s “Ambition 2039” goals, which include a 60% reduction in logistics-related CO2 emissions by 2039 compared to 2021. The use of SAF is a key strategy for achieving this reduction in air freight emissions.
DB Schenker and Mercedes-Benz have a long-standing partnership across various transport modes. Mercedes-Benz was among the initial customers when DB Schenker launched the world’s first regular cargo flight powered by SAF in 2021.
SAF, produced from waste materials like used cooking oil, offers a sustainable alternative to conventional jet fuel, reducing lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 80%. This partnership demonstrates a collaborative effort to decarbonize air freight and promote cleaner logistics solutions.
