DHL Express Cosmo Oil Marketing Sustainable Aviation Fuel

DHL Express has signed a significant agreement with Cosmo Oil Marketing Co., Ltd. to purchase 7.2 million liters of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) annually, starting in April 2025. This marks the first initiative of its kind for the international express industry in Asia and DHL’s first SAF purchase in the region.

The SAF will be produced in Japan by Saffaire Sky Energy LLC, a subsidiary of Cosmo Energy Holdings Co., Ltd., at its upcoming mass production facility. This partnership ensures a stable SAF supply for DHL Express and supports the company’s efforts to promote sustainable air cargo transport in Japan.

“We are pleased that, through our agreement with Cosmo Oil Marketing, we will be the first international express provider in Japan to use locally produced SAF on scheduled regular cargo flights,” said Tony Khan, President and Representative Director of DHL Express Japan. “SAF is currently the most effective solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in air transport.”

Koji Moriyama, President, Representative Director and Chief Executive Officer of Cosmo Oil Marketing Co., Ltd., added, “We are delighted to contribute to the decarbonization efforts of DHL Express and its customers through SAF, one of our key decarbonization products.”

Expanding SAF Use Across the Network

DHL Express currently utilizes SAF at various airports worldwide, and this agreement adds Central Japan International Airport (Nagoya Airport) as the first SAF location in Asia within the DHL Express global network.

This initiative also expands the reach of DHL’s GoGreen Plus service, which allows customers to reduce their carbon footprint by utilizing SAF for their shipments. The SAF procured through this agreement will be tracked using the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification Credit Transfer System for Sustainable Aviation Fuels, ensuring transparency and credibility for environmental claims throughout the supply chain.

Leading the Way in Sustainable Logistics

This partnership underscores DHL’s commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The company is actively implementing various decarbonization measures, including electrifying its delivery fleet, utilizing SAF, operating carbon-neutral facilities, and promoting its GoGreen Plus service.
