To enhance global logistics capabilities, FedEx has announced an increase in the frequency of its international cargo flights connecting Qingdao, China, to the United States. This initiative coincides with the inauguration of a new international gateway facility in Qingdao, marking a significant investment in the region’s logistics infrastructure.

The newly enhanced flight route departs from Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport, includes a stopover in Osaka, Japan, and concludes in Memphis, Tennessee. Initially launched as a once-weekly service in May 2024, the flight schedule has now expanded to five weekly flights, running from Monday to Friday. The upgraded frequency is set to streamline transit times for outbound parcels and freight shipments, allowing for next-day delivery on select shipments to the U.S.

FedEx has integrated this new flight service with its existing ground network in Shandong, providing same-day service for customers in select cities, including Qingdao, Yantai, Weihai, Jinan, Zibo, and Weifang. This development is expected to give local businesses greater flexibility in arranging shipments and broaden their reach in global markets.

The newly inaugurated Qingdao international gateway is FedEx’s fifth facility in China, joining existing gateways in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. The facility is approximately 2,000 square meters equipped with a fully automated sorting system, significantly improving the efficiency of sorting for local inbound and outbound shipments and enhancing the shipping and customs clearance experience for customers in Shandong Province.

“FedEx remains committed to enhancing connectivity in Asia Pacific, and our expanded flight operations from Qingdao to the U.S. strengthen a vital trade link, particularly during the peak shopping season,” stated Kawal Preet, President of Asia Pacific, FedEx. “Our focus is on delivering a superior customer experience by continuously transforming our air network, increasing capacity, and creating faster connections.”

Qingdao serves as a crucial trade hub in Shandong Province, with total imports and exports reaching RMB 754.72 billion in the first ten months of 2024, marking a 3% increase year-on-year, and maintaining its status as the leading city in the province for trade. Cargo and mail throughput at Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport has also risen, totalling nearly 206,700 tons in the first three quarters, reflecting a 10.5% year-on-year growth.

With these advancements, FedEx aims to bolster international air cargo resources in Qingdao and align with the city’s vision of becoming a key international transport hub during the forthcoming 15th Five-Year Plan period. This year marks the 40th anniversary of FedEx operations in China, highlighting its ongoing investment in infrastructure and technology to support the nation’s thriving trade.
