In a significant effort to promote global conservation, FedEx Corporation successfully transported six giant pandas on a roundtrip journey between the United States and China. The flights began on October 12, departing from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta, GA, and delivered four pandas to Chengdu, China. The return flight brought two pandas to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI) in Washington, D.C.

The specially designated “FedEx Panda Express,” a Boeing 777-F, undertook this critical mission. On the outbound flight, the pandas included 27-year-old Lun Lun and 27-year-old Yang Yang, residents of Zoo Atlanta since 1999, along with their twin female offspring, Ya Lun and Xi Lun, born in 2016. After a successful transit, these four pandas arrived at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding on October 13.

On the return leg of the journey, two-year-old pandas Bao Li and Qing Bao were transported from Chengdu to Dulles International Airport on October 15. These young pandas, grand cubs of the celebrated Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, have begun their quarantine period at NZCBI ahead of their scheduled public debut in January 2025.

For over two decades, FedEx has partnered with the Chinese government and various zoos globally to ensure the safe transportation of giant pandas. The company has generously donated shipping costs as part of its ongoing corporate social responsibility and commitment to environmental conservation.

Kawal Preet, president of FedEx Asia Pacific, highlighted the company’s expertise in facilitating such vital logistics, stating, “Our role in these efforts extends beyond logistics to supporting global conservation initiatives and fostering international collaboration. FedEx is proud to ensure that each of these precious shipments arrives safely and securely, reflecting the trust placed in us to protect what matters most.”

Prior to their journey, the pandas were acclimated to their enclosures to ensure their safety and comfort. Upon arrival in their new homes, they were welcomed by their keepers, who are committed to their care and well-being as part of this important conservation effort.
