Glasgow Prestwick Airport (PIK) welcomed the first Hong Kong Air Cargo (HKAC) flights on February 11th, 2025, marking the airport’s first direct connection to the Far East. HKAC initially operated an Airbus A330-200F from Hong Kong to PIK, with additional flights following on February 18th and 25th.
“The arrival of Hong Kong Air Cargo’s flights is a clear sign that our efforts to develop Prestwick as a leading e-commerce hub are delivering results,” said Nico Le Roux, Business Development Director at PIK.
PIK has made significant investments to enhance its cargo handling capabilities and attract traffic from the Far East, including new equipment and the appointment of a dedicated airport representative in Greater China. This new route complements PIK’s recently announced partnerships with Royal Mail Group and Chicago Rockford Airport.
The initial HKAC flights carried shipments from major e-commerce platforms operating out of Hong Kong, including SHEIN, Temu, and TikTok.
“PIK is our first new destination for 2025 and is the ideal choice to support our growing operations into the UK,” said Tony Ma, Chairman of Hong Kong Air Cargo. “We look forward to working closely with the team at Prestwick to develop this new route.”
Focus on Scottish Exports
PIK is actively working to secure cargo for the return flights to Hong Kong, presenting a significant opportunity for Scottish exporters.
“The next step is ensuring that the return flights to Hong Kong are fully utilized,” said Le Roux. “Scottish salmon and whisky are highly sought-after in Asia, and this new route provides a direct and efficient means of getting these premium products to the Hong Kong and mainland Chinese market.”
The airport is collaborating with Scottish export associations to promote the use of PIK for exports to the Far East, offering a more efficient alternative to trucking goods to London Heathrow Airport.
