IATA and ASA Unite to Enhance Ground Handling Safety and Efficiency

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Airport Services Association (ASA) are ramping up their collaborative initiatives in a concerted effort to improve ground handling safety and efficiency within the aviation industry. The partnership aims to fortify standardisation, promote the sharing of safety data, and explore innovative strategies to bolster sector resilience.

Nick Careen, IATA’s Senior Vice President of Operations, Safety, and Security, highlighted the importance of global standards in aviation safety. “ASA and its members have played a crucial role in the development of the ground handling standards we rely on today. We can enhance this essential activity by sharing safety data with informed, data-driven insights. The effectiveness of this data will depend on wide participation from ground handlers to enrich our collective understanding,” he stated.

Fabio Gamba, Director General of ASA, emphasized the significant milestone represented by this partnership. “This collaboration leverages the expertise of both organizations to provide stronger support for ground and cargo handling professionals around the globe. We aim to establish reliable standards and best practices that the entire industry can depend on,” Gamba explained.

The collaboration between IATA and ASA will focus on several key areas:

Safety Data

The organizations will utilize ASA’s Safety Incident Database alongside IATA’s Incident Data Exchange, part of the Global Aviation Data Management (GADM) initiative, to share and analyze safety information. This approach is intended to proactively tackle safety challenges associated with ground and cargo handling.

Industry Standards

ASA will continue collaborating with IATA to create industry best practices and standards for foreground and cargo handling. The focus will be on key publications such as the IATA Ground Operations Manual (IGOM) and the Airport Handling Manual (AHM), ensuring their industry-wide adoption and minimizing variations.

This partnership marks a significant step toward advancing safety and efficiency in ground handling operations, which will benefit the aviation sector as a whole.
