The state-owned flag carrier of Qatar, Qatar Airways Cargo recently announced they have started freighter operations to Almaty in Kazakhstan, providing more than 200 tonnes of capacity every week to the Kazakh city. This is their second new destination in 2019.
Qatar Airways Cargo will employ two of their Boeing 777 freighters on the twice-weekly service, departing from Doha on Thursdays and Sundays, arriving in Almaty on the same day. For the return journey, the freighters arrive into Doha via Hong Kong.
Mr. Guillaume Halleux, Chief Officer Cargo for Qatar Airways said, “2018 was a great year for us and we are excited to launch our second freighter destination in 2019, just 10 days after the launch of freighter services to Guadalajara, Mexico. The new addition further strengthens our global freighter network while expanding our footprint in Europe, which is a key market for air freight. Customers globally are offered a direct connection for imports into Almaty from our hub in Doha and can count on us for efficient and world-class service for their air freight requirements.”
As the largest metropolis in Kazakhstan, Almaty is considered a key financial centre with their imports being mainly general cargo, fashion and high-tech products. With this latest addition, Qatar Airways Cargo has now expanded their European network increased to 16 destinations.
The air cargo carrier experienced a 10% increase in volumes for 2018 compared to the previous year, while their other products also performed exceptionally well with positive tonnage growth and several enhancements introduced.
