Yusen Logistics signed an agreement with Otsuka Pharmaceutical on August 5th, 2024, to utilize Yusen Book-and-Claim, an airfreight forwarding service utilizing SAF. The service aims to help Otsuka reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Scope 3) arising from the transportation of their pharmaceutical products using air freight.

Yusen Book-and-Claim offers customers the entitlement of Scope 3 emissions reductions on top of basic air freight forwarding service by concluding an SAF usage agreement with Yusen Logistics. In this context, an agreement to use Yusen Book-and-Claim has been concluded with Otsuka.

Otsuka is actively working on introducing renewable energy and optimizing energy efficiency to achieve a decarbonized and sustainable society. This marks the first agreement signed with a customer in the healthcare sector since the SAF option Yusen Book-and-Claim was offered in April 2023. Yusen Logistics aims to support Otsuka’s sustainability efforts in air cargo transportation by reducing GHG emissions in their supply chain and contributing to the Otsuka Group’s 2050 environmental vision, Net Zero.

Furthermore, Yusen Logistics has been selected as the freight forwarder for the SAF Promotion Project led by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and is actively contributing to expanding the use of SAF. Through Yusen Book-and-Claim, the company will issue a GHG emissions reduction certificate for the amount of GHG emission reduction equivalent to SAF used for transporting Otsuka’s pharmaceutical products from Japan to the United States using air freight. This will contribute to a GHG emission reduction of up to 50 tons under Scope 3 (fiscal year 2024). As a partner generating sustainable growth with its customers and as a core company of the NYK Group, which has set ESG as a growth strategy, Yusen Logistics is committed to enhancing its optimal supply chain logistics services and promoting initiatives with a sustainable long-term perspective.
