To enhance cargo services, Qatar Airways Cargo has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japan Airlines, marking a new chapter in their longstanding partnership. This agreement aims to strengthen their collaboration and improve product offerings for their cargo customers.

This development follows the recent commencement of daily passenger flights between Tokyo Haneda Airport in Japan and Hamad International Airport in Qatar by Japan Airlines. The MoU expands the relationship between Qatar Airways Cargo and Japan Airlines Cargo (JALCARGO), both of which are members of the oneworld alliance.

The agreement was formalized by Mr. Mark Drusch, Chief Officer of Cargo at Qatar Airways Cargo, and Mr. Yuichiro Kito, Senior Vice President and Head of Cargo and Mail at Japan Airlines. Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer also attended the signing ceremony.

Mr. Drusch emphasized that the MoU represents a commitment to a deeper partnership, facilitating the integration of both airlines’ networks through their respective hubs in Doha and Tokyo. He noted that this collaboration will enhance connectivity and broaden the range of destinations available to customers, linking Japan to Qatar Airways’ extensive networks throughout Europe, the Middle East, the Levant, and Africa.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kito highlighted that this agreement solidifies the longstanding relationship between JAL and Qatar Airways Cargo. He pointed out that for the first time in 13 years, Japan Airlines has resumed operations of its own freighters. The partnership is expected to leverage both JAL’s passenger flights and freighter network along with Qatar Airways’ expanding network, broadening access to an even larger number of destinations for cargo transport.

The two carriers are committed to streamlining cargo transfers between them, ensuring a more efficient service for customers. They plan to enhance their collaboration further by optimizing their networks and expanding cooperation into various areas. Additionally, next year, Qatar Airways Cargo will introduce freighter services linking Hamad International Airport with Japan Airlines’ hub at Tokyo Narita.

This strengthened partnership is anticipated to generate significant economic benefits by facilitating trade between the regions served by both airlines. In the past year, Qatar Airways Cargo and JALCARGO have successfully handled 4,462 tonnes of import and export cargo in Japan, showcasing the positive impact of their collaboration. They expect this figure to grow substantially as their partnership evolves in the coming years.
