Cathay Cargo and DB Schenker celebrated a significant milestone today with a signing ceremony at Cathay City headquarters. This event marked the global forwarder’s official membership in the Cathay Corporate Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Programme.
Attendees included Tom Owen, Cathay Director Cargo, and Susanne Stemmer, DB Schenker Vice President of Global Carrier Relations. The ceremony underscored DB Schenker’s commitment made earlier this year to become the largest contributor to the programme, highlighting both organizations’ dedication to reducing carbon emissions in the aviation sector.
Tom Owen expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are delighted to welcome DB Schenker as the newest and biggest contributor to our Corporate SAF Programme. This level of support from such a vital player in air cargo is instrumental in our journey towards decarbonizing aviation. Today, we celebrate DB Schenker’s significant contribution to our efforts to fly Greener Together.”
Established in 2022, the Cathay Corporate SAF Programme enables members to purchase SAF for use on Cathay Pacific and Cathay Cargo flights, facilitating a reduction of over 2,600 tonnes in carbon emissions. By committing to buy 878 tonnes of SAF—approximately 290,000 US gallons—DB Schenker advances its sustainability goals.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 80% on a life-cycle basis compared to traditional jet fuels. As part of their initiative, Cathay Pacific and Cathay Cargo aim to incorporate SAF for 10% of their jet fuel consumption by 2030, which aligns with their Fly Greener programme that offers carbon offsetting through certified projects.
DB Schenker has been integrating SAF into its transport volumes since 2020, strengthening its carbon reduction strategy. Alexander Mentgen, DB Schenker Global Air Freight Sustainability Manager, remarked, “SAF is making change possible already today. Our new alliance with Cathay Cargo significantly enhances our sustainability commitment in the skies.”
Susanne Stemmer added, “We are thrilled about our collaboration with Cathay Cargo, which will propel our industry towards a more sustainable future and deepen our long-standing global partnership.”
This collaboration underscores a shared vision for a greener aviation industry, setting a precedent for sustainability and industry-wide cooperation.
