DHL Global Forwarding Japan and Nippon Cargo Airlines (NCA) have successfully transported semiconductor manufacturing equipment via four charter flights from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) to New Chitose Airport in Japan. This initiative significantly reduces transit time and supports the growth of Japan’s semiconductor industry.

To ensure smooth and efficient transport, a main deck loader specifically designed for semiconductor equipment was transferred to New Chitose Airport, and personnel received specialized training. Measures were implemented to minimize temperature fluctuations during transport, including regular cargo temperature checks and close collaboration with ground handling companies.

“As Japan experiences strong growth in semiconductor equipment sales, maintaining a 30% market share in the sector, second only to the United States, efficient and reliable transportation solutions are crucial,” said Karsten Michaelis, President/Representative Director of DHL Global Forwarding Japan. “Our collaboration with Nippon Cargo Airlines is a key step in ensuring that Japan continues to lead in this critical sector.”

Collaboration and Preparation

In the year leading up to the charters, DHL and NCA collaborated closely with customers to plan infrastructure requirements and strategize the safe and efficient transport of semiconductors, even in Hokkaido’s challenging winter weather.

“This charter was very challenging for us under severe weather and operational constraints in Chitose,” said Hitoshi Watanabe, Executive Officer of Nippon Cargo Airlines. “We could never have achieved success without the cooperation of our reliable partner, DHL Global Forwarding Japan. I am honored that we could build our collaboration and be a part of this national project.”

Supporting Japan’s Semiconductor Industry

As Japan focuses on growing and localizing its semiconductor industry, with a goal of tripling semiconductor sales by 2030, establishing efficient transportation for sensitive semiconductors is essential.

DHL Global Forwarding Japan and NCA are committed to supporting the development of Hokkaido and the Japanese manufacturing industry by exploring ways to strengthen transportation for the semiconductor sector. This collaboration highlights their dedication to providing reliable and efficient logistics solutions for this critical industry.
