MASkargo is the proud recipient of the Ground Handling License (GHL) issued by the Malaysian Aviation Commission (“MAVCOM/Commission”) today. The license is for a period of thirty-six (36) months from 1 March 2020 to 28 February 2023. Speaking on the achievement of receiving the license, Mohd. Zulkefly Ujang, MASkargo’s Chief Operations Officer said, “This is the best news which is much needed right now! The license is the testament of our efficiency in providing cargo handling solutions for our customers at our 11 cargo terminals. Our team has been working hard to secure the license and the intensive work over the last six months has finally paid off. We went through multiple audits, interviews, and various paperwork with the Civil Aviation Authority Malaysia (CAAM) and MAVCOM teams before finally getting their green light! My appreciation goes out to everyone whose contribution made this happen!”.

The GHL received is for four Categories of Scope:

  • Category 1 – Ground Administration and Supervision (liaison, communications, handling, storage)
  • Category 3 – Freight and Mail Handling (handling of related documents and safety/customs procedures)
  • Category 7 – Surface Transport (organization of transport between terminals)
  • Category 10 – Freight and Mail Handling (physical handling of mail)

The ground service is not a walk in the park. Speed, efficiency, and accuracy are important. In the cargo terminals, the team usually work under time pressure, but also must observe care in handling what is sometimes fragile cargo. In the course of preparing the freight for flight, the team is required to use multiple material handling equipment, such as forklifts, automated storage, and retrieval system (ASRS) and powered conveyors to move cargo and freight within the terminal. In the course of loading and unloading cargo, some of which can weigh in excess of a metric ton, the team must observe all safety precautions. In addition, they must also observe strict security protocols to ensure only cargo that has been cleared by security personnel and safe to be loaded make it to the designated flight.
