Recently launched Skyway Airlines of the Philippines has appointed Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl), Hong Kong’s largest independent handler, as its handling agent for its new freighter services to Hong Kong. These services are specifically aimed at the burgeoning e-commerce sector. Hactl will provide comprehensive, one-stop-shop operations for Skyway, including terminal handling, ramp handling, and documentation.

Service Details and Market Impact

Skyway Airlines commenced flights on March 20, utilizing its 18-tonne capacity B737-400 freighters. The airline operates six-times-weekly services, with three flights destined for its Clark International Airport base and three to Manila. Hong Kong marks the airline’s inaugural international destination.

The Philippines, an archipelago of over 7,000 islands, faces significant logistical challenges. Traditionally, domestic air cargo has relied on the belly holds of passenger aircraft. However, the rapidly expanding e-commerce sector, significantly boosted by the COVID-19 pandemic, has created a critical demand for dedicated cargo capacity. Skyway Airlines aims to fulfill this need by directly connecting the Philippines to Hong Kong International Airport, the world’s busiest international airport.

Leadership Perspectives

Jose Angelo Peralta, President & CEO of Skyway Airlines, expressed enthusiasm for this international expansion, stating that securing Hactl’s one-stop service support significantly streamlined their service launch into Hong Kong International Airport. He hopes these new services will contribute to trade development between Hong Kong and the Philippines.

Joanna Li, Hactl Executive Director – Commercial and Business Development, welcomed Skyway Airlines as a valuable addition to Hactl’s carrier family, noting that it addresses a genuine need for the Philippines and further enhances Hactl’s global connections. She extended best wishes for Skyway Airlines’ success and looked forward to supporting their business growth.
