Qatar Airways Cargo, a leading global air cargo carrier, has forged a new partnership with Virgin Australia to significantly increase cargo capacity to and from Australia. This collaboration will provide an additional 180+ tonnes of cargo capacity per week across key Australian export hubs: Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth.
Enhanced Capacity and Route Expansion
This new partnership will boost Qatar Airways Cargo’s total capacity to more than 400 tonnes each way, each week, significantly increasing from its current 240 tonnes of belly cargo capacity into Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth.
Starting in June 2025, Virgin Australia will operate daily Boeing 777 flights between Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, and Doha. These widebody belly-hold services will provide substantial uplift potential, offering 129 tonnes of cargo capacity each way between Doha and Perth, 30 tonnes for Brisbane, and 21 tonnes for Sydney. Furthermore, effective December 2025, Virgin Australia will add daily Boeing 777 flights from Melbourne in partnership with Qatar Airways.
Driving Australian Trade and Global Connections
Mark Drusch, Chief Officer Cargo at Qatar Airways Cargo, emphasized Australia’s pivotal role in global trade and the importance of providing its exporters with optimal connectivity. He highlighted Qatar Airways Cargo’s expertise in handling sensitive shipments like perishables and pharmaceuticals, positioning them as a trusted partner for Australia’s trade ambitions. Drusch noted that the addition of Virgin Australia’s Boeing 777s more than doubles airfreight capacity on key routes, calling it a “bold move” that reinforces Qatar Airways Cargo’s leadership in connecting Australia to the world’s most dynamic markets.
Dimitris Politis, Head of Cargo at Virgin Australia, expressed excitement about combining Virgin Australia’s strong domestic network with Qatar Airways’ global reach. He believes this collaboration will deliver significant new capacity for Australian exporters and strengthen their ability to connect Australian businesses with international markets.
Two-way trade between Qatar and Australia already surpasses AUD 3.4 billion (QR 8 billion) annually, with Qatar being among Australia’s top trading partners in the Middle East and North Africa. Qatar Airways Cargo plays a central role in this success, ensuring Australian exports, particularly perishables and pharmaceuticals, reach global markets with unmatched speed and reliability. Currently, one in every 14 air cargo shipments from Australia is handled by Qatar Airways Cargo, transiting through its advanced Doha hub en route to the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas.
