Lufthansa Cargo Jettainer IoT ULD Tracking Solution

Lufthansa Cargo has become the launch customer for a new IoT-based ULD tracking solution developed by Jettainer, marking a further step in the partners’ long-standing collaboration.

The solution is being rolled out across Lufthansa Cargo’s entire ULD fleet as part of broader efforts to enhance digital transparency and operational efficiency. Implementation has already begun. The announcement was made at the IATA World Cargo Symposium 2026 in Lima, Peru.

Enhancing ULD Visibility and Control

Jettainer manages Lufthansa Cargo’s global ULD operations, including positioning, maintenance and repair, supporting one of the largest ULD fleets in worldwide cargo and passenger operations.

The new IoT tracking system enables real-time visibility of ULD movements across the global network. By combining stationary and mobile readers, the solution ensures continuous tracking, including at locations with limited infrastructure.

This approach reduces blind spots and provides more accurate data on ULD location and dwell time, allowing airlines to respond more quickly to operational disruptions and improve overall asset management.

Supporting Data-Driven Operations

The enhanced visibility is expected to reduce search times, improve recovery of misplaced equipment and strengthen operational control across the network.

Oliver von Götz, VP Global Fulfilment Management at Lufthansa Cargo, said the rollout would enhance reliability, efficiency and service quality through improved fleet visibility.

Dr Jan-Wilhelm Breithaupt, CEO of Jettainer, added that the partnership sets a new benchmark for digital ULD management, particularly for large-scale global fleets requiring high levels of transparency and control.
