DHL Global Forwarding Japan Explosives Detection Dog Screening Service

DHL Global Forwarding Japan has launched a new air cargo security screening service using Explosives Detection Dogs (EDD), strengthening aviation security while improving screening efficiency for sensitive and oversized shipments.

The service became operational on 25 May 2026 and forms part of the company’s response to increasingly stringent air cargo security requirements.

Enhancing Security and Operational Efficiency

EDD screening enables large and sensitive shipments to be inspected without compromising cargo integrity, making it particularly suitable for products such as pharmaceuticals and high-value capital equipment that may not be compatible with conventional screening systems.

The new capability complements existing screening methods, including ETD and X-ray screening, which will continue to be used where appropriate.

Karsten Michaelis, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding North Asia, said the service enhances both security and operational efficiency while helping customers meet increasingly demanding regulatory requirements.

Strategic Partnership for K9 Screening

The initiative was developed through a partnership with Sanko Total Service Co., Ltd. (STS) and MSA Security, an Allied Universal company.

STS was recognised by the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau as an EDD screening provider in April 2026, allowing DHL Global Forwarding Japan to formally implement the service under a dedicated agreement.

As part of the programme, STS personnel completed specialised training in the United States to support the deployment and operation of TSA-compliant K9 screening teams in Japan.

Supporting Global Supply Chains

According to DHL, EDD screening allows faster inspection of large cargo volumes while maintaining logistics speed and shipment integrity.

Combined with conventional screening methods, the service is expected to strengthen aviation security and support more efficient international supply chains.
