Global supply chain provider Yusen Logistics and Finnair Cargo have entered into a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) agreement focused on the acquisition and allocation of SAF-related environmental attributes.
Facilitated with support from Western Associates, Inc. (WAI), Finnair’s General Sales Agent in Japan, the agreement creates a structured framework to reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions associated with international air cargo operations.
Book-and-Claim Accounting and Scope 3 Reporting
The partnership leverages a Book-and-Claim accounting framework, decoupling the environmental attributes of SAF from physical fuel distribution and transport routing:
- Book-and-Claim Mechanism: Enables Yusen Logistics to purchase SAF-related environmental attributes directly from Finnair, applying the carbon offset values across its global cargo forwarding footprint without altering physical flight routing or cargo handling workflows.
- Emissions Verification and Scope 3 Transparency: Participating cargo shippers receive verified Scope 3 greenhouse gas emission reduction certificates and detailed audit reporting, allowing enterprise clients to document carbon reductions toward corporate ESG objectives.
- Multi-Year Demand Commitment: Establishes a multi-year commercial commitment for voluntary SAF procurement, providing predictable demand signals to support long-term SAF production scale and market availability.
