DSV Air ThermoDirect Network Direct Shanghai Route Global Healthcare Hubs

Global transport and logistics provider DSV has expanded its temperature-controlled Air ThermoDirect air freight network, establishing a direct connection between Luxembourg Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG).

The route expansion enhances DSV’s specialized cold-chain capacity to support growing pharmaceutical and healthcare trade between Europe and Asian growth markets, with additional transpacific US connections planned.

Operational Capacity and Ground Infrastructure

The dedicated freighter service provides controlled end-to-end routing to maintain strict thermal integrity for high-value biologics and medical products:

  • Hub Connectivity: Positions Shanghai Pudong International Airport as a central gateway for inbound and outbound pharmaceutical cargo across Greater China and the broader Asia-Pacific region.
  • Specialized Ground Handling: Partnered with Eastern Air Logistics (EAL) and China Eastern Logistics Cold Chain Ltd. to utilize dedicated cold-chain ground handling infrastructure and temperature-controlled staging areas in Shanghai.
  • Schedule and Capacity Control: Operated via dedicated freighter aircraft, enabling DSV to manage flight schedules, transit times, and ramp-handling procedures directly to limit Time Out of Range (ToR) risks.

Packaging Innovations and Cost Strategies

The service incorporates modular thermal packaging mechanisms to optimize air freight cost structures and environmental metrics:

  • Modular Packaging Program: Utilizes reusable thermal packaging systems to reduce reliance on active container leasing and traditional single-use passive insulation, reducing total packaging weight and waste.
  • Compliance and Scalability: Delivers scalable temperature-controlled capacity compliant with Good Distribution Practice (GDP) standards for biopharma shipments across global trade corridors.

Executive Commentary

Kenneth Kallström, Executive Vice President and Global Enterprise Vertical Head for Healthcare at DSV, stated that establishing a direct temperature-controlled corridor into Shanghai provides healthcare manufacturers with greater supply chain resilience, reduced operational costs, and reliable product protection across Asia-Pacific healthcare markets.
