American Airlines Cargo has announced a significant upgrade to its operations at London Heathrow Airport (LHR), the airline’s largest cargo hub in Europe. The company has completed a major facility expansion by relocating to a new site that combines its previous locations, allowing for a more efficient and flexible operation for both imports and exports.

The newly constructed facility spans 120,000 square feet, marking a 15,000-square-foot increase over the original combined space. This expansion nearly doubles the capacity for the storage of PMC pallets. Enhanced features in the new building include additional landside and airside doors, new X-ray machines, and more build stations, all designed to expedite acceptance, delivery, and cargo handling processes.

In tandem with the facility enhancement, American Airlines has upgraded its digital operational communications with Worldwide Flight Services (WFS). This collaboration introduces a new digital connection between WFS’s system, CargoSpot, and American’s iCargo platform, streamlining operations even further.

Sam Mendenhall, Vice President of Operations for American Airlines Cargo, commented on the move, stating, “The facility expansion is a significant milestone for us in how we operate in LHR. We are confident that the move to a larger, more uniform cargo facility, coupled with the technology enhancements with WFS, will unlock operational efficiencies and ultimately provide a better experience for our customers who ship in and out of LHR.”

American Airlines currently operates 20 widebody flights daily from LHR to major hubs across the United States, with the frequency increasing to as many as 26 flights per day during the peak summer season.
