Emirates, the world’s largest international airline, has made a significant commitment to sustainability by joining the Move to -15°C global coalition. This initiative marks Emirates as the first airline to contribute its expertise to the coalition, which aims to revolutionize temperature standards for frozen food and enhance energy efficiency throughout the frozen food supply chain.

Launched at the COP28 conference in the UAE, the Move to -15°C coalition is focused on exploring the environmental impact of adjusting frozen food temperature standards by three degrees while maintaining food quality and safety. The coalition seeks to unite cross-industry partners to share data, propose operational adjustments, and engage with policymakers to drive this transformative effort.

Emirates SkyCargo, the airline’s freight division, currently transports between 900 and 1,000 tonnes of fresh food daily. While the frozen food segment represents a smaller portion of that cargo, Emirates has invested heavily in building a robust cool chain infrastructure and innovative technologies, positioning the airline to make a meaningful impact in rethinking the frozen food supply chain.

Dennis Lister, Senior Vice President of Product and Innovation at Emirates SkyCargo, expressed enthusiasm for the coalition’s mission. “We have long been leaders in the movement of perishable food, connecting global agricultural producers with customers around the world. The Move to -15°C coalition aligns with our vision for evolving the industry using the latest advancements in technology and infrastructure. We look forward to leveraging our insights to help shape the future of food logistics while contributing to meaningful environmental change,” he stated.

Thomas Eskesen, Chairman of the Move to -15°C coalition, welcomed Emirates’ involvement, highlighting the airline’s crucial role in the global cold chain. “Ambitious climate action across the intricate frozen food supply chain is only achievable through collaboration across sectors. Emirates’ participation is a promising indicator that change can happen when industries unite for a common purpose,” he noted.

Established in 2023, the Move to -15°C coalition emerged from the findings of the Three Degrees of Change report, an academic study supported by global logistics firm DP World and experts from institutions such as the International Institute of Refrigeration and the University of Birmingham.

Emirates is dedicated to driving sustainable and environmental initiatives within its operations and the wider industry. Recognizing that broad-reaching changes require collective action, the airline’s strategy includes partnering with other industry players to address significant challenges. Beyond the Move to -15°C coalition, Emirates is also an industrial partner of the Aviation Impact Accelerator and has joined The Solent Cluster in the UK, which aims to reduce CO2 emissions and develop low-carbon fuels.
