Finnair Cargo has announced its membership in the Smart Freight Centre (SFC), a global non-profit organization dedicated to minimizing the environmental footprint of freight transportation. This strategic move underscores Finnair Cargo’s commitment to sustainable logistics and its proactive role in addressing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the supply chain.
SFC provides a robust framework that enables companies to accurately measure, manage, and ultimately reduce their GHG emissions stemming from freight and logistics operations. With a membership nearing 200 diverse organizations worldwide, SFC serves as a critical platform for industry collaboration and knowledge exchange within the cargo transport ecosystem.
Driving Decarbonization in Air Cargo Through Collaboration and Innovation
“Joining SFC was a clear choice for us as the organization offers a valuable networking and peer forum, enabling us to gain the latest insights and knowledge from the industry,” stated Gabriela Hiitola, Senior Vice President, Finnair Cargo. Her remarks come on the heels of Smart Freight Week 2025 in Amsterdam, which convened nearly 1000 participants and emphasized the urgent need for collective action, innovation, and industry-wide commitments to achieve net-zero logistics.
As a new member of the SFC community, Finnair Cargo is poised to actively contribute to the development of decarbonization efforts specifically within air transport. Finnair itself is a strong proponent of the industry’s ambitious target of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, and has set an even more aggressive internal goal: a 34.5% reduction in emissions intensity from its 2023 baseline by 2033. This target has received validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), underscoring its scientific rigor.
“Our membership in SFC will provide us with the opportunity to share knowledge and discuss best practices related to emissions reporting and decarbonization with like-minded organizations,” commented Janike Heimonen, Sales and Sustainability Manager at Finnair Cargo. “This collaboration aligns with the industry’s long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions. By working together, we can drive meaningful change and make significant strides towards a sustainable future.”
Finnair Cargo has a long-standing history of active participation in various sustainability surveys, continuously providing emission data to key industry bodies such as IATA (for CO2 Connect) and directly to SFC, further demonstrating its dedication to transparency and progress in sustainable freight practices.
