In a proactive move to enhance safety standards, Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) has unveiled a dedicated Lithium Batteries Storage Zone. This newly established zone is equipped with state-of-the-art CO2 fire suppression systems and fire-proof partitions to isolate lithium battery cargo from other shipments. Additional fire extinguishers have also been strategically placed to further mitigate the risk of any potential battery fire.
LED signage has been installed across multiple floor levels to clearly demarcate the specialized Lithium Batteries Storage Zone, ensuring proper storage and efficient retrieval of battery cargo. Furthermore, Hactl’s Box Storage System (BSS) has been reprogrammed to store stillages containing lithium batteries in positions that are more accessible for fire-fighting and isolated from other cargo types. This measure aims to contain any lithium battery fire promptly, minimizing damage to other cargo and safeguarding Hactl’s critical operations.
Wilson Kwong, Chief Executive of Hactl, emphasized the importance of these precautions, stating, “Shipments containing lithium batteries are an important revenue stream for the air cargo industry, but the potential risks of handling lithium batteries are well known. This fact, coupled with the ever-increasing tonnages that we are required to handle, means that we must take every possible precaution.”
Kwong also highlighted Hactl’s investment in an intelligent cargo thermal detection system to provide advance warning of any exceptional conditions that may indicate the impending risk of a battery fire. The additional safety measures underscore Hactl’s commitment to operational innovation and effective risk management, aiming to ensure the safety of staff, terminal users, and customers’ property.
In closing, Kwong expressed hope that Hactl’s proactive stance on enhancing safety measures for lithium battery handling would serve as an inspiration for others in the industry to review and upgrade their own safety protocols.
