American Airlines Cargo has significantly increased its yearly long-term plastic waste reduction through its ongoing partnership with BioNatur Plastics. In 2024, the carrier reduced plastic waste by the equivalent of 12.6 million plastic water bottles, nearly doubling the 6.4 million bottle reduction achieved in 2022 when the partnership began.

American Airlines Cargo replaced over 274,000 lbs. of traditional plastic with BioNatur’s biodegradable alternatives, which break down in landfill environments within 8 to 12 years without producing micro-plastics. The airline uses these products, including pallet covers, poly sheeting, stretch wrap, and plastic covers, at most U.S. hubs, select domestic stations, and in Latin America, with plans for further expansion across its operations.

Greg Schwendinger, President of American Airlines Cargo, highlighted the success of the partnership and the impact of sustainable practices, emphasizing the commitment to a greener future. Chris Paladino, President of BioNatur Plastics, praised American Airlines Cargo’s leadership in sustainability and expressed enthusiasm for continued growth in 2025.
