Cathay Cargo has become the first carrier to adopt IATA’s ONE Record data protocol in its daily operations with freight forwarders, achieving this milestone a year ahead of IATA’s target implementation date of January 2026.

Since December 2024, three mainland China-based freight forwarders – Sinotrans Air Freight, WECAN International Freight Forwarding International Logistics, and ALL-LINK Logistics – have been exchanging eAWB and shipment status information with Cathay Cargo using ONE Record APIs. In January 2025, Sinotrans Hong Kong Air Transportation Development became the first Hong Kong-based forwarder to join the initiative.

“These successful real-world use cases demonstrate Cathay Cargo’s commitment to leading the digitalization of air cargo,” said Tom Owen, Director of Cargo at Cathay. “The ease of aligning our customers’ systems with ONE Record highlights the benefits of this transition, including operational efficiencies, enhanced security, and greater transparency.”

Benefits of ONE Record

IATA’s ONE Record initiative provides end-to-end shipment visibility, allowing stakeholders to track cargo movements and access richer data than standard communication protocols. This includes multi-dimensional data from Cathay Cargo’s Ultra Track solution, such as temperature and geolocation, as well as data from cooltainers with data transmitters.

“We are thrilled to be the first cargo forwarder to partner with Cathay in the roll-out of ONE Record for data communication,” said Wen Xuan Zang, Director of Digitalisation at Sinotrans. “This innovative approach will revolutionize our operations, enhancing efficiency and transparency in cargo shipment processes.”

Industry-wide Collaboration

The air cargo industry involves numerous stakeholders, and IATA’s ONE Record aims to make shipment information accessible to all authorized parties.

“All this data is only meaningful when considered together, in the context of one shipment,” said Henk Mulder, Head of Digital Cargo at IATA. “IATA’s ONE Record data-sharing standard offers an intelligent data infrastructure where data is linked in a vast and decentralized network.”

Cathay Cargo is committed to collaborating with its customers to increase transparency and data connectivity in air cargo. The company plans to continue providing API links to facilitate the adoption of ONE Record across the industry.

“At Cathay Cargo, we know how important it is to work with our customers to increase the transparency and data connectivity of air cargo,” added Owen. “We will continue to take the lead in providing the API links necessary to customers and look forward to helping more of them implement direct connection with us using the ONE Record protocols.”
