Air cargo carrier Cathay Cargo served as the Official Equine Transport Partner for the Asian debut of equestrian theater show CAVALLUNA, transporting over 50 horses on a dedicated charter flight from Europe to Hong Kong.
The operation utilized the carrier’s specialized Cathay Live Animal solution to move eight distinct horse breeds aboard a 12-hour direct freighter flight.
Flight Operations and Temperature Control Standards
The transport setup adhered to strict International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animals Regulations to ensure animal welfare during long-haul flight operations:
- Flight Routing and Fleet: Operated via a chartered Boeing 747 freighter departing from Liège Airport, Belgium, directly to Hong Kong International Airport.
- Thermal Regulation: Maintained aircraft main deck ambient temperatures within a strict 10°C to 19°C range to manage body heat generated by horses standing in travel stalls.
- Specialized Flight Procedures: Applied modified approach and landing profiles to minimize sudden movements, g-forces, and cabin noise during descent and touchdown.
- Stabling and Ramp Handling: Used IATA-compliant ventilated travel stalls alongside low-speed tarmac transfer protocols to minimize waiting times and noise exposure at Cathay Cargo Terminal.
Certification and Market Position
The charter highlights Cathay Cargo’s specialized capabilities in live animal logistics:
- Industry Credentials: Holds IATA CEIV Live Animals certification, transporting more than 1,000 elite racehorses and showjumpers annually.
- In-Flight Support: Flight operations integrated dedicated professional grooms aboard the main deck to manage feeding, hydration, and health monitoring in coordination with the flight crew.
Executive and Partner Commentary
Dominic Perret, Director Cargo at Cathay Cargo, noted that coordinating multi-breed equine flights requires tailored onboard environmental controls and ground handling to ensure animal wellbeing.
Siri Paratsch, Horse Choreographer at Apassionata World, stated that Cathay Cargo’s cold-chain and live-animal handling expertise provided the operational reliability needed to expand the CAVALLUNA show outside of Europe for the first time in its 23-year history.
