In a move to bolster its commitment to sustainability, DB Schenker has joined Cathay Pacific’s Corporate Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Programme, becoming the largest contributor to the initiative to date. With a pledge to reduce its carbon emissions, DB Schenker will purchase 878 tonnes of SAF, equivalent to 290,000 US gallons, marking a significant step in the fight against climate change.

The Corporate SAF Programme, established in 2022, enables members to buy SAF for uplift on Cathay Pacific and Cathay Cargo flights from various ports in the network, including Hong Kong. This move aligns with the aviation industry’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Cathay Pacific has committed to having 10% of its fuel needs sourced from SAF by 2030, further emphasizing the industry’s shift toward sustainable practices. Additionally, Cathay Cargo’s Fly Greener programme offers carbon offsetting through certified community and environmental projects.

The initiative also highlights collaboration within the industry, with the Cathay Group signing a memorandum of understanding with Singapore Airlines to promote the development and usage of SAF in the Asia Pacific region. Cathay Cargo has also secured orders for new next-generation Airbus freighters, aiming to improve fuel economy.

Tom Owen, Cathay Pacific’s Director of Cargo, expressed delight in welcoming DB Schenker to the programme, acknowledging the company as the biggest contributor to date. This partnership signifies a growing demand for SAF and underscores the joint effort to create a more sustainable air cargo industry.

Thorsten Meincke, Global Board Member for Air and Ocean Freight at DB Schenker, emphasized the collaboration’s contribution to a sustainable future, reinforcing the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship in the air cargo industry.

The SAF used in this partnership is derived from waste cooking oil and animal fats, offering a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional jet fuel.

The collaboration between DB Schenker and Cathay Pacific not only demonstrates a shared commitment to sustainability but also paves the way for a greener future in the air cargo industry.
