Ethiopian Airlines has introduced a new twice-weekly cargo flight service connecting Addis Ababa with Urumqi, China. The inaugural flight was celebrated with a traditional water cannon salute upon its arrival at Urumqi Diwopu International Airport. The new route will operate every Monday and Thursday, solidifying a key freight corridor between Africa and Asia.
This new service is expected to significantly enhance the airline’s presence in Western China, offering importers and exporters more efficient freight movement and broader market access. The launch is a strategic move to serve as a catalyst for cross-border commerce and supply chain efficiency between the two continents.
Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, emphasized the importance of the new route. “The launch of our cargo service to Urumqi marks yet another significant step in strengthening our footprint in China and deepening air trade links between Asia and Africa,” he said. “As a strategic gateway to Western China, Urumqi opens new possibilities for cross-border commerce, supply chain efficiency, and economic integration.”
Tasew reaffirmed the airline’s commitment to expanding its cargo network with a focus on creating reliable, fast, and seamless logistics. “China continues to be one of our most important markets, and this new route reaffirms our long-term partnership and vision for shared prosperity,” he added.
Ethiopian Airlines currently operates a vast network in Asia, with more than 190 weekly flights to 27 destinations, including 83 weekly flights to 11 cities in China. The airline’s modern fleet and advanced cargo infrastructure, which includes tech-enabled temperature control, allow it to transport nearly one million tons of cargo annually across its global network of over 140 destinations.
The new service is part of Ethiopian Airlines’ ongoing mission to strengthen Africa-Asia connectivity and further establish Addis Ababa as a major global cargo hub.
