A new player has entered the Hong Kong air cargo market with the launch of MSC Air Cargo, a rebranded aircraft operator of AlisCargo Airlines. The Milan-based airline, a subsidiary of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), has partnered with Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Ltd (Hactl) for ground handling services.

MSC Air Cargo’s freighters first touched down in Hong Kong in December 2022, running flights on a CMI (Crewing, Maintenance, and Insurance) basis through another Hactl client. The expansion accelerated when MSC acquired a majority stake in AlisCargo Airlines in August 2023, a carrier that previously operated up to 20 “preighters” per month during the COVID pandemic, all managed by Hactl.

In early 2024, MSC completed its acquisition of AlisCargo Airlines, resuming flights to Hong Kong in July under its own operating certificate. Hactl has now enhanced its services for the new carrier, adding ramp handling to provide a comprehensive one-stop solution for MSC Air Cargo.

MSC Air officially adopted its new name on September 5th and commenced flights from its Milan hub to Hong Kong on September 10th, operating three times weekly. The airline’s fleet of five freighters also services major cities, including Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, Mexico City, Quito, Xiamen, Seoul, and Karaganda.

Jannie Davel, Senior Vice President of MSC Air Cargo, expressed enthusiasm about the new operations, stating, “We are excited about the potential for our newly-expanded Hong Kong operations and are very pleased to extend the successful historic collaboration with Hactl. Their extensive facilities and focus on service quality will bolster our growth.”

Joanna Li, Hactl’s Executive Director of Commercial and Business Development, added, “We are delighted to welcome back an old friend under its new name and with its greatly increased capacity. We wish MSC Air every success and look forward to supporting its development in the Asia market.”
