Strategic Investment in Singapore, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur Designed for Resilience and Sustainable Logistics
Rhenus Group, a leading global logistics provider, is significantly increasing its investment in Southeast Asia to strengthen its air freight network across key global trade corridors. This expansion directly addresses the escalating shift in cargo flows toward the region, largely influenced by the China Plus One strategy, which has led to increased volumes and a greater demand for resilient, flexible, and cost-effective logistics solutions.
Despite facing headwinds such as weaker external demand, elevated tariffs, and persistent policy uncertainty, Asia remains positioned as the largest driver of global growth, projected to contribute approximately 60% of the world’s growth in 2025 and 2026. This confidence is underpinned by strong trade corridor growth: IATA reported that air freight volumes in the Europe/Asia corridor alone grew by 12.4% year-over-year as of September 2025, confirming the strategic importance of cities like Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur as key inbound and outbound hubs for European cargo.
New Gateways Optimize Global and Intra-Asia Connectivity
In 2025, Rhenus established new air freight gateways in Singapore and Bangkok (Thailand), which complement its already existing hub in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). These three strategic gateways are designed to optimize cargo flows across Southeast Asia and integrate them seamlessly into global trade lanes.
The specific roles of the gateways in Rhenus’s network include:
- Kuala Lumpur: Facilitates inbound cargo from Europe and outbound cargo destined for Oceania.
- Singapore: Handles inbound cargo from Asia or Oceania, and manages outbound cargo to the Americas.
- Bangkok: Manages outbound cargo to Europe and serves as a vital multi-modal hub, enhancing Intra-Asia trade capabilities through regional air freight and cross-border trucking.
Digital and Sustainable Operational Excellence
Chris Bode, Vice President of Global Air Freight, Rhenus Air & Ocean, highlighted that Southeast Asia is a focus growth area for Rhenus Air Freight. He noted that the gateways are at the center of the expansion plans and are built with scalability in mind, integrating the latest digital and sustainable logistics solutions to provide global customers with flexibility and efficiency.
The fully operational gateways offer a comprehensive suite of solutions, including door-to-door services, customs clearance, cargo consolidation, and value-added air freight services. Operational efficiency is driven by technology-enabled capabilities such as smart logistics platforms, real-time tracking, and digital documentation. Furthermore, sustainable logistics initiatives, including the deployment of electric vehicles for pre and on-carriage, optimized routing, and low-emission transport options, will be embedded across all three hubs.
Joachim Hanssen, CEO APAC, Rhenus Air & Ocean, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting customers in these fast-growing markets. He expressed confidence that these strategic plans will enhance resilience and operational agility, positioning Rhenus as a preferred partner to meet evolving regional and global trade needs. Rhenus will continue to identify strategic investment opportunities across the overall APAC region.
