MoU Signed at Dubai Airshow to Explore VTOL Aircraft Deployment, Propelling UAE’s Global Logistics Hub Vision
Emirates SkyCargo and LODD Autonomous have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the 2025 Dubai Airshow, initiating a partnership to explore the development and deployment of next-generation air cargo solutions. This collaboration between the two homegrown pioneers aims to propel the UAE’s strategic vision of becoming a top five global logistics hub, a goal that involves driving innovation and digital transformation across the economy.
The agreement was signed by Badr Abbas, Emirates SkyCargo’s Divisional Senior Vice President, and Rashid Al Manai, Chief Executive Officer of LODD Autonomous.

Validating the Hili Hybrid VTOL Aircraft
Under the terms of the MoU, the two entities will jointly validate the use of VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft across Emirates SkyCargo’s extensive global network through feasibility studies, regulatory engagement, and live demonstrations. Leveraging over four decades of expertise, Emirates SkyCargo will participate in LODD’s experimental operations through the end of 2027, providing crucial insight to inform the design and development of the new technology for future commercial deployment.
The partnership follows the successful first test flight last week of LODD’s flagship aircraft, the Hili. Developed and manufactured in Abu Dhabi, the Hili is an unmanned, hybrid heavy-lift cargo aircraft that is fully autonomous from take-off to landing.
The Hili is designed for the middle-mile logistics market, bridging the gap between major distribution centers and end-delivery points. It offers a payload capacity of up to 250 kilograms and a travel distance of up to 700 kilometers. The hybrid-electric design combines eight electric motors for vertical take-off and landing with an internal combustion engine used for efficient cruise flight.
The Hili is currently being evaluated for potential integration into Emirates SkyCargo’s ground fleet to manage operations across its dual airport hub in Dubai, which would enhance the seamless movement of goods within its local network.
Commitment to Sustainable and Efficient Logistics
Badr Abbas stated that this partnership reflects their commitment to introducing innovative products that solve customer transportation challenges, emphasizing that emerging technologies will form the foundation of the next era of logistics.
Rashid Mattar Al Manai commented that the collaboration blends LODD’s frontier technologies with the country’s commitment to safe, scalable, and sustainable logistics. The goal is to accelerate the adoption of drone-powered solutions that expand reach, cut delivery times, and strengthen the UAE’s position as a global logistics hub.
LODD, which is supported by the Advanced Technology Research Council, is advancing civilian logistics with autonomous aerial vehicles and AI-enabled software. Emirates SkyCargo continues to lead the sector, having recently launched Emirates Courier Express, a door-to-door delivery service designed to modernize cross-border eCommerce by utilizing both its cargo and passenger fleet network.
