New UK Hub Powered by 100% Renewable Energy Strengthens Support for Major Global Cargo Operators

Unilode Aviation Solutions, the global leader in outsourced Unit Load Device (ULD) management, repair, and digitalization, has officially opened its new state-of-the-art Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Stud Brook Business Park. Located just minutes from East Midlands Airport, the 27,000-square-foot site marks a major milestone in Unilode’s strategy to scale its regional and global operations.

As the operator of the world’s largest digitized ULD fleet—exceeding 200,000 units—Unilode serves more than 90 airlines across a network of 550 airports. The new East Midlands hub significantly enhances its ability to support major regional operators, including DHL, Singapore Airlines, Aer Lingus, Finnair, TUI, and West Atlantic.

A Benchmark for Sustainable Global Growth

The opening is part of a broader global investment program that includes new MRO centers in Hong Kong and Singapore, alongside major facility refurbishments in London Heathrow and Newark, USA.

Janis Balkens, Chief Operating Officer at Unilode, highlighted the facility’s role in meeting rising customer demand while setting a high bar for environmental responsibility. He noted that the operation is powered by 100% renewable energy and aligned with BREEAM certification standards, ensuring that the growth benefits customers, employees, and the environment alike.

Ross Marino, CEO of Unilode, described the site as the company’s best MRO facility globally, emphasizing that the investment in world-class infrastructure is essential to maintaining the company’s “champions league” standing in the aviation industry.

Strategic Location and Future Expansion

The choice of Castle Donington was strategic, given its proximity to the industrial heartbeat of the UK and the major DHL hub. The facility not only improves turnaround times for ULD maintenance but also provides a benchmark for future “from-scratch” builds planned for Saudi Arabia, India, and Brazil in 2026.

By establishing a long-term presence at Stud Brook Business Park, Unilode is reinforcing its commitment to the UK logistics sector while creating new local jobs and enhancing service flexibility for key clients in Manchester and Birmingham.
