Carrier Becomes First Japanese Airline Certified for Both Air and Ground Pharmaceutical Logistics

Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. (JAL) has successfully renewed its CEIV Pharma certification (Center of Excellence for Independent Validators in Pharmaceutical Logistics) at Narita Airport. Following a rigorous audit by IATA that concluded on October 24, 2025, JAL has achieved a significant industry milestone by becoming the first airline in Japan to include ground transportation within the scope of this prestigious certification.

Since first obtaining the certification in 2023, JAL has focused on the continuous enhancement of its quality management and handling systems. The move comes as global demand surges for the high-quality, temperature-controlled transport of sensitive pharmaceuticals, including vaccines, biopharmaceuticals, and regenerative medicine products.

Integrating Japan’s First GDP-Compliant Trucking Network

In 2024, JAL launched Japan’s first GDP-compliant inter-airport trucking service, creating a secure pharmaceutical link between Haneda, Narita, and Kansai—the nation’s three primary international gateways. By including these ground services in the latest CEIV Pharma renewal, JAL now offers a certified, end-to-end pharmaceutical logistics solution that covers both air and road transit.

The expanded certification confirms that JAL’s ground operations meet the same stringent international standards as its air freight handling. This provides pharmaceutical manufacturers with increased reliability and visibility for time- and temperature-sensitive shipments moving across Japan’s major logistics hubs.

Addressing Diversifying Medical Transport Needs

The renewal highlights JAL’s proactive approach to the diversifying needs of the healthcare market. By ensuring that every touchpoint in the supply chain—from the aircraft to the truck—is certified for pharmaceutical integrity, the airline is positioned to handle the most delicate medical cargo with a high degree of safety and reliability.

JAL remains committed to evolving its logistics infrastructure to support the global healthcare industry and ensure the secure delivery of life-saving medicines to patients worldwide.
