In a significant development for global air cargo operations, Qatar Airways Cargo has announced a new strategic partnership with MASkargo, the cargo airline and subsidiary of Malaysia Aviation Group. The partnership was officially inaugurated by Mr. Mark Drusch, Chief Officer Cargo at Qatar Airways Cargo, and Mr. Mark Jason Thomas, Chief Executive of MASkargo.

This collaboration, which took effect on October 1, 2024, aims to enhance global cargo connectivity and operational efficiency between the two carriers. Since the start of the partnership, around 2,400 tonnes of cargo have been transported, including over 600 tonnes of perishables and 130 tonnes of pharmaceuticals.

The partnership facilitates Qatar Airways Cargo’s Boeing 777 flights from Doha to Kuala Lumpur two times a week, increasing the weekly cargo capacity by more than 200 tonnes. Furthermore, MASkargo’s Airbus freighters will be instrumental in connecting Kuala Lumpur to Sydney and Melbourne, carrying over 75 tonnes of cargo weekly with a quick connection time of just eight hours in Kuala Lumpur. This collaboration takes full advantage of the state-of-the-art facilities at Hamad International Airport (DOH) and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL).

The alliance is mutually beneficial, providing MASkargo access to key markets in Europe, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the Levant, and Africa. Conversely, Qatar Airways Cargo will gain enhanced access to the Australian and New Zealand markets, as well as South East Asia and North East Asia. This partnership also supports the local Kuala Lumpur market by expanding opportunities for product exports.

Mr. Mark Drusch emphasized the partnership’s significance, stating, “As the world’s leading global air cargo carrier, this partnership with MASkargo is a testament to our commitment to exceptional service and tailored solutions. By combining our strengths, we aim to offer enhanced connectivity and efficiency, ensuring our customers’ products reach global markets in optimal condition.”

Mr. Mark Jason Thomas echoed these sentiments, highlighting the partnership as a pivotal advancement for MASkargo. He remarked, “This collaboration positions us better than ever to serve as a bridge between Southeast Asia and key international destinations, strengthening our infrastructure and capacity to support the regional economy and global market demands.”

In July 2024, the two airlines had previously signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing product offerings to cargo customers and achieving operational synergies. This strategic agreement allows both airlines to leverage each other’s network strengths and fleet capacity, significantly boosting cargo offerings.

The partnership also extends to passenger services, as both Qatar Airways and Malaysia Airlines are members of the Oneworld alliance. Their codeshare agreement covers 62 destinations globally, demonstrating a commitment to delivering seamless travel experiences. The strategic MoU signed in 2022 further enhances this partnership, increasing flight options and destinations for travelers.

This new alliance between Qatar Airways Cargo and MASkargo is poised to set new standards in air cargo transportation and strengthen the global supply chain.
