Yusen Logistics Tokyo Metropolitan Government Project Supporting SAF Biofuels

Yusen Logistics Co., Ltd. has been officially selected as a certified freight forwarder for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s flagship environmental subsidy program. The initiative is designed to accelerate Scope 3 emissions reduction across international supply chains by incentivizing the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and marine biofuels.

Under the framework of this government-backed project, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government covers all or part of the premium costs associated with procuring alternative green fuels, lowering the financial barrier for companies working to decarbonize their freight operations.

Program Scope Expands to Intermodal Transport Lanes

The sustainable transport initiative originally launched in fiscal year 2024 as a localized pilot project solely focused on promoting SAF within the air freight sector. Due to strong corporate interest and the pressing need to address maritime transport footprint allocations, the program has been expanded for fiscal year 2026 to systematically include ocean freight transport as well.

This contract marks the second consecutive year that Yusen Logistics has been selected to manage the government distribution program. By incorporating maritime routes alongside air logistics, the logistics provider can now assist a broader cross-section of manufacturing and retail clients in reducing the overall greenhouse gas (GHG) impact of their global distribution networks.

Leveraging the Global Book-and-Claim Green Solution

To support these environmental targets, Yusen Logistics utilizes its specialized “Alternative Fuel” green solution, which launched across the global group network in May 2025. The platform operates under a standardized book-and-claim accounting model, allowing the environmental benefits of alternative fuels to be calculated, verified, and allocated directly to a shipper’s specific carbon accounting ledger.

This accounting framework offers significant operational advantages:

  • Decoupled Allocation: Customers receive certified carbon reduction values regardless of the specific physical flight path, vessel voyage, or geographic location where the biofuel is uploaded.
  • Widespread Network Access: Shippers can apply these certified environmental values across transport operations spanning 46 countries and regions worldwide.
  • Waste-to-Energy Logistics: The alternative fuels utilized through the program are derived from verified renewable resources, including processed waste cooking oil and agricultural by-products.

Aligning Corporate Goals with Net-Zero 2050 Mandates

The continuation of the partnership with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government aligns with Yusen Logistics’ core corporate strategy to achieve net-zero emissions across all customer-facing supply chain services by fiscal year 2050.

Hidenori Hara, President of Yusen Logistics Co., Ltd., emphasized the company’s commitment to developing environmentally friendly transport networks in close cooperation with international airlines and ocean carriers. He noted that the expansion of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government project into ocean freight provides an invaluable tool for helping businesses navigate tightening international sustainability regulations while maintaining competitive, high-quality global logistics operations.
