Cathay Cargo successfully transported around 60 elite showjumping horses from Europe to Hong Kong for the Longines Hong Kong International Horse Show, held at AsiaWorld-Expo from 30 January to 1 February 2026.

The operation followed Cathay Cargo’s involvement in the event last year and involved a dedicated charter flight from Liège, Belgium, to Hong Kong International Airport. Liège was selected for its established cargo infrastructure and specialist equine handling facilities. The horses were transported on a Boeing 747 freighter, with the aircraft’s main deck and temperature-controlled environment used to support animal welfare during the 12-hour flight.

Cathay Cargo’s specialist teams coordinated ground and air logistics, including priority handling and controlled transfers. During the flight, CEIV-certified crew monitored temperature and airflow, while professional grooms accompanied the horses to oversee their condition throughout the journey.

Dominic Perret, Director Cargo at Cathay, said the transport of competition horses required careful planning and execution to minimise stress and ensure readiness on arrival. He added that live animal logistics remains a growing segment within the airline’s cargo operations.

Live Animal Transport Capabilities

Cathay Cargo said its Live Animal solution is based on compliance with International Air Transport Association (IATA) standards, optimised routing to limit transit time, and certification under IATA’s Centre of Excellence for Independent Validators (CEIV) Live Animals programme. The airline was the first carrier in Asia to achieve CEIV Live Animals certification.

Jo Peck, Event Director at HPower International, said the airline’s experience and handling standards were critical to ensuring certainty for riders and organisers at an international-level competition.

The successful delivery of the horses marked Cathay Cargo’s continued involvement in supporting international equestrian events and specialist live animal transport into Hong Kong.
