Global transport and logistics giant CMA CGM Group has signed a preliminary agreement to acquire Crystal Aero Solutions, a specialized provider of aircraft line and light maintenance services. The transaction, which is subject to standard regulatory reviews and employee consultation processes, marks a strategic step forward for the group as it builds in-house technical capabilities to support its expanding air cargo division, CMA CGM AIR CARGO.
Headquartered at Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport, with additional operational line stations at Brussels Airport and Liège Airport, Crystal Aero Solutions manages critical aircraft availability for both cargo and passenger airlines. The company also deploys specialized mobile teams to execute international aircraft engine support operations across Asia and Africa.
Securing Fleet Availability and Operational Resilience
Crystal Aero Solutions has functioned as a primary third-party maintenance partner for CMA CGM AIR CARGO since 2024. By transitioning from a standard vendor relationship to an owned-asset model, CMA CGM secures several strategic and technical advantages across its European networks:
- Minimized Fleet Dwell Time: Direct control over line maintenance schedules allows the group to accelerate mandatory pre-flight checks and routine system troubleshooting, minimizing unexpected technical groundings.
- Strategic Hub Alignment: Crystal Aero Solutions’ geographic footprint aligns directly with CMA CGM’s primary European air gateways in France and Belgium, placing maintenance engineers exactly where the freighter fleet rotates.
- Dedicated Engine Support: Access to mobile engine support teams ensures that complex power-plant maintenance can be handled quickly across international routes, preserving schedule integrity.
Maintaining Multi-Customer Independence and Management Continuity
Following completion of the transaction, Crystal Aero Solutions will enter a new growth phase backed by the international resources and logistics scale of the CMA CGM Group. However, the company will maintain its operational independence within the market. It will continue to provide, market, and develop its line maintenance services for its existing portfolio of third-party passenger and cargo airlines.
To ensure stability during the transition, Crystal Aero Solutions will retain its current executive management team, who will continue to lead everyday operations and drive external commercial growth.
Scaling an Integrated Multimodal Logistics Network
The acquisition aligns with CMA CGM’s long-term strategy to offer commercial shippers an end-to-end, controlled multimodal transport network combining ocean shipping lines, port terminals, landside contract logistics, and main-deck air freight. Launched in March 2021, CMA CGM AIR CARGO has grown rapidly to provide an agile alternative for high-value, time-critical supply chains.
The airline’s current active fleet comprises eight large-capacity widebody freighters:
- Five Boeing 777Fs: Serving as the long-haul transpacific and intercontinental backbone.
- Two Boeing 747Fs: Utilized for heavy-lift, oversized industrial cargo allocations.
- One Airbus A330F: Managing regional and high-frequency mid-range trade lanes.
To support sustained international volume growth, the carrier’s fleet capacity will expand starting in 2027 with the scheduled delivery of eight next-generation Airbus A350F freighters.
Damien Mazaudier, Senior Vice President of the Air Division at CMA CGM Group, noted that the transaction marks a significant milestone in the development of the group’s air freight activities. He emphasized that as the fleet expands, having direct access to the technical expertise of Crystal Aero Solutions will protect flight operations across strategic European platforms. He added that CMA CGM is equally committed to supporting Crystal Aero Solutions’ external commercial growth while preserving its independent role serving the wider airline industry.
