Global third-party logistics provider CEVA Logistics has significantly increased its controlled air freight capacity along critical transpacific trade lanes. The forwarder has launched a new, high-frequency air charter program connecting Hanoi, Vietnam, to Chicago, while simultaneously renewing its scheduled charter route from Wuxi, China, to Chicago.
The strategic expansion directly supports international manufacturers executing “China-plus-one” supply chain diversification strategies by securing predictable, multi-weekly main-deck freighter capacity outside of volatile public spot markets.
Cross-Border Routing Architecture and Equipment Fleet
The expanded transpacific network utilizes long-range Boeing 777 full-freighter aircraft, which are well-suited for high-density, long-haul industrial cargo due to their structural payload capacity and fuel efficiency.
The twin routes operate on distinct weekly rotations:
- Hanoi (HAN) to Chicago (ORD): Operating three times per week, this newly established service provides same-day departure and arrival windows. It serves as a direct export pipeline for high-tech electronics, industrial machinery, apparel retail, and cross-border e-commerce sectors concentrated in northern Vietnam’s industrial zones.
- Wuxi (WUX) to Chicago (ORD): Operating on a stable, twice-weekly schedule, this renewed service offers up to 100 tons of main-deck capacity per flight. For its second year of operation, the route will be flown by sister company CMA CGM Air Cargo, marking a major operational collaboration within the broader CMA CGM Group.
To optimize flight utilization, CEVA has expanded its inland first-mile cargo consolidation networks. In Vietnam, domestic operations teams coordinate multimodal freight flows and customs brokerage across multiple regional manufacturing gateways, including Hanoi, Danang, and Ho Chi Minh City. In China, CEVA leverages its nationwide ground network to draw electronics and components from multiple industrial origins directly into the Wuxi airport gateway.
High-Velocity Processing at the Chicago Gateway Hub
To maximize the efficiency of both inbound transpacific flight streams, all cargo is routed through CEVA’s advanced Chicago logistics gateway facility. Located adjacent to O’Hare International Airport (ORD), the 700,000-square-foot multi-function facility features 350,000 square feet of dedicated air freight handling space designed to accelerate cargo breakdown and sorting.
The specialized infrastructure within the Chicago hub includes:
- Free Trade Zone (FTZ): An 8,000-square-foot designated zone allowing importers to defer, reduce, or eliminate customs duties while cargo undergoes sorting or consolidation.
- Dual-Chamber Cold Storage: A 6,000-square-foot climate-controlled footprint engineered to preserve temperature-sensitive healthcare, pharmaceutical, or perishable shipments.
- Certified Cargo Screening Facility (CCSF): Equipped with Explosive Trace Detection (ETD), advanced X-ray imaging, and specialized K-9 inspection teams, enabling immediate security clearance.
This onsite combination allows inbound freight to move rapidly from the aircraft cargo holds through customs clearance and onto CEVA’s domestic line-haul trucking networks, significantly compressing end-to-end transit times to major North American distribution centers.
Decarbonization Pathways and Strategic Vision
In line with shifting corporate environmental mandates, shippers utilizing these transpacific air corridors can opt to integrate Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) into their supply chains. This option is managed through CEVA’s FORPLANET logistics suite, which provides certified carbon-reduction tracking to help brands offset the environmental impact of urgent air transport.
Loic Gay, Vice President of Global Air and Ocean Operations at CEVA Logistics, stated that the company continues to strategically expand its controlled air network along key transpacific trade lanes to guarantee customers access to reliable and resilient capacity. He noted that the launch of the new Hanoi charter directly addresses the rapid growth of Vietnam as a primary manufacturing hub, while the return of the Wuxi service supports the market’s need for supply chain stability. By leveraging CMA CGM Air Cargo’s fleet alongside the Chicago gateway, CEVA delivers the end-to-end speed, security, and flexibility that international shippers require.
