DHL Express has inaugurated its new international hub at the Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, marking the completion of an €80 million investment project finished in less than two years. This new facility is designed to accommodate the significant growth in international express transport the company has experienced, reinforcing Barcelona as a critical node in DHL Express’s global network.
The hub drastically improves the company’s ability to process parcels, with a sorting capacity of more than 20,000 pieces per hour, which is a sevenfold increase over the previous facility. This scale is vital for managing volumes driven by international e-commerce. Spain’s geographical position is further highlighted by this investment, solidifying its role as a strategic bridge connecting Europe, the Americas, and Africa—key markets for small and medium-sized enterprises.
A Strategic Investment for Long-Term Growth
Mike Parra, CEO of DHL Express Europe, stated that the new hub is a strategic investment built for future growth, aligning with DHL Group’s Strategy 2030: Accelerate Sustainable Growth. The facility is built to handle projected growth for the next 20 years, ensuring it can adapt to changing shipment flows without disrupting operations. It will serve the entire Catalan territory, including the four provinces of Barcelona, Lleida, Girona, and Tarragona, as well as the Balearic Islands and Andorra, promoting the international competitiveness of the over 20,000 Spanish companies DHL Express supports.
Connectivity and Sustainability
DHL Express operates a dedicated aviation network at Barcelona, running 10 flights daily alongside an additional 6 intercontinental commercial connections. The company plans to expand this further by incorporating two new network flights.
Operational efficiency is paired with a strong commitment to environmental responsibility. The new facility is a benchmark in sustainability, featuring a photovoltaic energy installation for self-consumption, a greywater recovery system, and intelligent LED lighting with sensors. To support its transition to a green fleet, 37 electric chargers for delivery vans have already been installed, with the infrastructure pre-installed to expand to 100% capacity. This aligns with the DHL Group’s ambitious goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The new hub also incorporates advanced security, including state-of-the-art X-ray solutions and integrated customs control to ensure the individual monitoring and maximum safety of every package.
This milestone is one of several planned investments in Spain; DHL is also undertaking the opening of a new operational facility in Girona this year and investing over €40 million in Vitoria to create the second-largest DHL Express aircraft maintenance hangar in Europe by 2027.
