IATA 10th Anniversary CEIV Program

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is commemorating the 10th anniversary of its Center of Excellence for Independent Validators (CEIV) program, which continues to elevate quality, safety, and compliance within the air cargo supply chain.

Launched in 2014 with the CEIV Pharma certification for specialized cargo handling, the CEIV program has expanded to encompass pharmaceuticals (CEIV Pharma), live animals (CEIV Live Animals), perishables (CEIV Fresh), and dangerous goods (CEIV Lithium Batteries). Built upon global standards and independent validation, these programs foster enhanced transparency and operational consistency throughout the industry.

Over the past decade, the IATA CEIV program has achieved significant milestones:

  • Established a global network of 699 certified companies, including 85 airlines, covering an extensive 250,000 trade lanes.
  • Facilitated the creation of 25 airport communities, uniting airlines, ground handlers, freight forwarders, and regulators in their commitment to global best practices.
  • Provided training to 10,000 professionals, supported by over 100,000 IATA manuals, to drive operational excellence and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrated its value with a strong 99% renewal rate among certified entities.

“CEIV has fundamentally reshaped the handling of special cargo shipments,” stated Brendan Sullivan, Global IATA Global Head of Cargo. “Over the last ten years, it has built a strong foundation of trust, transparency, and technical expertise across the supply chain, resulting in tangible benefits for the industry. These include improved compliance, a stronger focus on quality, enhanced collaboration across sectors, and increased confidence among customers. As the program continues its growth trajectory, it will remain an indispensable tool for the industry in addressing evolving challenges and expectations.”

Looking Towards the Future of CEIV Certification

The CEIV program is committed to continuous evolution to meet the changing needs of the air cargo industry. The integration of new technologies now enables remote training and virtual assessments, enhancing accessibility without compromising the program’s rigorous standards.

IATA is actively collaborating with regulatory authorities to broaden the recognition of CEIV certifications and extend the program’s reach into additional cargo segments.

“As global supply chains become increasingly intricate, the necessity for consistent and reliable standards has never been greater,” added Sullivan. “CEIV will continue to champion innovation, strengthen compliance, and enhance safety throughout the air cargo ecosystem.”

Companies holding CEIV certification can be readily identified through IATA’s ONE Source platform, serving as the industry’s primary reference for validated and trusted suppliers.
