Nippon Express Co., Ltd. (NX Group) and Nikon Corporation have officially signed an agreement to utilize Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for air cargo transport for the second consecutive year. The partnership utilizes the “NX-GREEN SAF Program” to directly address Nikon’s Scope 3 CO2 emissions, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to a carbon-neutral supply chain.
Nippon Express was selected for the second year running as a designated agent for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s project to promote SAF use, serving as the bridge between environmental compliance and global logistics.
NX-GREEN SAF Program: Reducing the Carbon Footprint
The agreement covers air cargo shipments scheduled between May and December 2025, with Nippon Express providing verified CO2 reduction certificates to Nikon. These certificates represent the actual emissions saved by replacing conventional jet fuel with SAF.
Key Sustainability Targets:
- Nippon Express (2030): A 50% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions (from 2013) and a 25% reduction in Scope 3 emissions (from 2022).
- Nippon Express (2050): Full carbon neutrality across all scopes.
- SBT Certification: The NX Group’s 2030 targets were officially certified as SBT (Science Based Targets) short-term targets in June 2025.
Strategic Partnership for Green Logistics
As a long-standing logistics partner, the NX Group provides Nikon with a sales and operational structure tailored specifically to the high-precision requirements of optical and imaging equipment.
- Scope 3 Leadership: By participating in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s project, Nikon is taking a proactive role as a shipper in decarbonizing the aviation sector.
- Verified Reporting: The use of the “NX-GREEN SAF Program” ensures that emission reductions are quantified and auditable, supporting Nikon’s long-term environmental vision.
- Collaborative Innovation: The partnership seeks to balance environmental responsibility with the high logistics quality required for Nikon’s global distribution.
Moving Toward a Carbon-Neutral 2050
The renewal of this agreement highlights the growing trend of “green procurement” in the electronics and precision instrument sectors. By choosing SAF, Nikon is effectively “insetting” carbon reductions within its own transport network rather than relying on external offsets.
Nippon Express plans to continue expanding the NX-GREEN suite of services to include multimodal low-carbon options, supporting multinational clients in achieving their sustainability materialities while maintaining a competitive global footprint.
