Cathay Cargo Terminal has made history as the first air cargo terminal in Hong Kong to implement Artificial Intelligence (AI) within its CCTV infrastructure, significantly enhancing safety and security monitoring across its facilities. This innovative initiative, in collaboration with Intenseye, a prominent provider of AI-powered workplace safety solutions, aims to proactively identify and mitigate safety hazards in real time.

The state-of-the-art technology utilizes the existing CCTV network to monitor a variety of potential safety and security risks, including instances where safety equipment is not being worn, vehicles or equipment get too close to personnel, and non-compliance with pedestrian walkways or work-at-height protocols. Additionally, the system is capable of detecting intrusions and addressing various terminal-specific scenarios.

In tandem with optimizing key features of the Intenseye solution to suit a cargo terminal environment, Cathay Cargo Terminal and Intenseye are set to introduce unique features tailored to the industry, such as instant alerts for unattended shipments at truck docks. The Intenseye system is designed with Ethical UI principles, ensuring built-in privacy protections while focusing on recognizing hazardous situations.

Cathay Cargo Terminal’s commitment to safety is underscored by its remarkable safety record, which was recently honored with five accolades at the Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health Awards, including the prestigious Gold Award for Safety Management System. Mark Watts, Chief Operating Officer at Cathay Cargo Terminal, emphasized the importance of this technology, stating, “We take safety and security extremely seriously. We see AI as an important tool to enhance and augment our existing safety management system, to help ‘see the unseen’ and improve hazard reporting.”

Sercan Esen, CEO of Intenseye, expressed excitement over the partnership, noting, “It’s thrilling to see Cathay Cargo Terminal lead the way as the first cargo terminal to adopt our technology, tailored specifically to their needs.”

Additionally, Cathay has begun installing AI on all X-ray machines at the terminal, enhancing its Enhanced Lithium Screening program, with plans to roll out AI capabilities in its Thermal Imaging program by 2025. Tom Owen, Director of Cargo and Chair of Cathay Cargo Terminal, remarked, “With this new AI technology, we are setting new standards in both safety and digital excellence for cargo terminal operators.”

This groundbreaking advancement positions Cathay Cargo Terminal at the forefront of safety innovation in the air cargo industry, setting a high standard for others to follow.
