Cathay Cargo GLS Jettainer ULD Challenge IATA ONE Record Hackathon

A joint team from Cathay Cargo and Global Logistics System (GLS) has been named the winner of the Jettainer ULD Challenge at the 2026 IATA ONE Record Hackathon. The event, held from April 24 to 26 at Cathay City, brought together international programming teams to develop digital solutions capable of modernizing the air cargo industry.

The winning solution focused on a critical industry pain point: ensuring the temperature integrity of cool passive pallets throughout the global supply chain.

Solving the “Cool Passive Pallet” Dilemma

As the global demand for temperature-sensitive shipments—such as pharmaceuticals and perishables—continues to rise, maintaining consistent environmental conditions is vital. The Jettainer ULD Challenge specifically tasked teams with finding a way to ensure that cool passive pallets always remain within their required temperature ranges.

The Cathay Cargo & GLS Innovation

The team developed a comprehensive, end-to-end tracking ecosystem designed to prevent temperature excursions:

  • Custom Hardware: A proprietary tracking device built from the ground up.
  • Multi-Sensor Suite: Equipped to monitor temperature, humidity, light intensity, and vibration.
  • Advanced Connectivity: Integrated Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS to ensure real-time data transmission regardless of location.

Real-Time Intelligence via ONE Record

The core of the winning project was its seamless integration with the IATA ONE Record standard. This allows the tracking data to be transformed into actionable insights that are instantly accessible to all stakeholders in the transport chain.

Key Features of the Winning Solution:

  • Continuous Monitoring: Real-time visibility into the pallet’s environment, ensuring compliance with strict exposure limits.
  • Instant Insights: An analytics platform that provides immediate alerts if a shipment deviates from its defined parameters.
  • Digital Ecosystem: A fully connected intelligence system that eliminates data silos and supports the industry’s push toward full digitalization.

Driving the Future of ULD Management

Dr. Jan Wilhelm Breithaupt, CEO of Jettainer, praised the team’s creativity, noting that their concept stood out in a field of strong competitors. He emphasized that combining such IoT tracking solutions with the ONE Record initiative offers significant potential to enhance Unit Load Device (ULD) management and deliver added value to customers.

This victory underscores the importance of cross-sector collaboration in air cargo. By merging Cathay Cargo’s operational experience with GLS’s technical expertise, the team has provided a blueprint for more reliable, transparent, and safe transportation of high-value, temperature-sensitive goods.
