Air Hong Kong Fleet Renewal Airbus A330F Freighter

Air Hong Kong has officially transitioned to an all-Airbus A330F freighter fleet, marking the completion of a seven-year re-fleeting programme in partnership with DHL Express. The milestone follows the retirement of the carrier’s final Airbus A300-600F freighter, which had served the airline and DHL Express reliably since 2004.

The re-fleeting programme, which began in 2018, brings Air Hong Kong’s all-cargo fleet to 14 Airbus A330F aircraft — including 10 A330-300 passenger-to-freighter conversions (A330-300P2F) and four A330-200F freighters. Air Hong Kong was an early adopter of the A330P2F platform and is now among the largest operators of this aircraft type globally.

“The A300-600F was a trusted workhorse of our fleet for over two decades,” said Mr. Clarence Tai, Chief Operating Officer at Air Hong Kong. “Its retirement is the end of an era, but it also marks a new beginning. The A330F allows us to enhance operational efficiency, increase payload, and better meet the needs of our customers, particularly in the growing e-commerce sector.”

The A330F offers approximately 25% more payload and cargo volume compared to its predecessor, along with a longer range of 7,400 kilometres. This has enabled Air Hong Kong to open new routes, including services to Bahrain and Sydney, while also aligning with the Cathay Group’s wider sustainability goals through improved fuel efficiency and reduced noise emissions.

DHL Express, Air Hong Kong’s key partner in the re-fleeting effort, also welcomed the transition. Mr. Peter Bardens, Senior Vice President of Network Operations & Aviation – Asia Pacific at DHL Express, said: “This reflects our long-term vision to evolve with customer needs and sustainability goals. The A330F freighters will strengthen our service capabilities and reinforce our environmental commitments.”

The move comes as the Cathay Group continues its HK$100 billion investment plan, coinciding with the expansion of the Three-Runway System at Hong Kong International Airport. The broader initiative includes the addition of over 100 new-generation aircraft across Cathay Pacific, Cathay Cargo, and HK Express, underscoring the Group’s ambition to reinforce Hong Kong’s status as a global aviation and logistics hub.
