American Airlines Cargo has completed another successful fresh ginger season, delivering more than 900 tons of high-quality Brazilian root ginger to the United States via key entry points at Miami (MIA) and Los Angeles (LAX). The record tonnage underscores Brazil’s growing reputation as a leading global exporter of fresh ginger and highlights American’s growing role in supporting the agricultural export sector.
This year’s shipments, flown from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo aboard American’s B787-8 and B777-200ER aircraft, consisted of ginger packed in standard cartons on skids—no refrigeration required—allowing for efficient handling and distribution. From both entry ports, the ginger is routed across the U.S. through a well-connected trucking network, reaching retailers and foodservice providers nationwide.
“We are seeing the growing importance of Brazilian ginger, which is a high-quality product with larger, cleaner roots that meet export standards with minimal processing,” said Ms. Lorena Sandoval, Sales Director for Florida, Caribbean and Latin America at American Airlines Cargo. “Many producers are also investing in more sustainable practices, which aligns well with market demand for traceability and environmental responsibility. We’re pleased to play a key role in bringing this special product to market.”
Sourced from the mountainous regions of Espírito Santo and São Paulo, the fresh ginger—often referred to as “Blue Ginger” due to its unique blue-grey hue—is prized for its bold aroma, spicy flavor, and high gingerol content. Its fibrous texture and nutrient density make it a favourite among both health-conscious consumers and culinary professionals.
While most of the imported Brazilian ginger is sold fresh in supermarkets, a portion is distributed to restaurants and foodservice outlets. All shipments arrive unprocessed, ensuring that the ginger’s full potency and natural characteristics are preserved.
