Cathay Cargo has activated a new Air-Land Fresh Lane that enables the direct import of fresh and chilled goods into the Greater Bay Area (GBA). The initiative, pioneered by the governments of Guangdong and Hong Kong SAR, is designed to expedite the transportation of perishable shipments from overseas to the GBA via the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge (HZMB).
Under the new process, shipments can travel from Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) to Zhuhai by temperature-controlled truck equipped with e-locks and GPS. The entire journey is managed under a single air waybill, simplifying the logistics for customers.
Streamlined Customs and Trial Shipments
The new process includes a “Certificate for Transshipment Confirmation” issued by the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department. This certificate streamlines the inspection and quarantine process at the Chinese Mainland border, reducing both the time and cost for customers. The HZMB Zhuhai Port also features a new temperature-controlled inspection facility for spot-checks and sampling.
The first shipment through the new lane took place in mid-August with a consignment of live lobsters from Melbourne. A subsequent trial involved a shipment of live geoducks from Los Angeles. Both consignments transitioned from aircraft to truck and crossed the border without delay, demonstrating the reliability of the new system.
According to James Evans, General Manager Cargo Commercial at Cathay Cargo, the new lane provides a direct path for premium perishable products to the GBA, a market with an estimated population of 86 million. The new route complements Cathay Cargo’s existing intermodal links across the region.
